August 2026

July was a month of contrasts. Australian shares pushed higher as cooling inflation data eased pressure on the Reserve Bank, while Wall Street wrestled with a more stubborn inflation picture and a divided Federal Reserve unwilling to signal any imminent relief on rates. Back home, the property market told a very different story, with national home values recording their steepest monthly fall since December 2022 as affordability pressures and three rate hikes earlier in the year finally caught up with buyers, even as rents kept climbing and vacancy rates stayed near record lows. This month's review unpacks what drove these diverging trends across shares and property, and what they might mean for household budgets and borrowers in the months ahead.
